Refinishing A Bathtub
Refinishing A BathtubIf you're debating on whether your should purchase a new bathtub or if you want to just improve your old one, to me the answer is pretty simple, but you'll need to weigh the pros and cons and the overall costs of both projects. Typically a new bathtub is going to cost at least $200, but when refinishing a bathtub, it'll cost you the price of a good repair kit and a few other items. Typically, refinishing a bathtub can be a do it yourself project that you can complete on a day off of work, but if you want you can hire a professional to take care of the job. If you're thinking about refinishing a bathtub in your home all by yourself, or maybe with a buddy, you'll want to make sure that you have a good repair kit, which can include a primer, sealer, and maybe a paint. You can refinish a porcelain, fiberglass, and cast iron bathtub. Just make sure that you get the right repair kit for your bathtub. Even if you work on refinishing a bathtub in your house, you'll need to realize that by refinishing a bathtub you're not bringing the old tub to a new life. You're just refinishing the coat, which is not duplicating the original coat. When refinishing a bathtub, you'll want to follow the following tips and suggested directions. Remember if all else fails, you can always hire someone to refinishing a bathtub. 1. You need to clean the bath tub and remove all the excess caulking. 2. Cover any areas around the tub that you don't want to be refinished- to include the drain and stopper, and anything else around the tub. You'll also want to go ahead and cover all cabinets, fixtures, and toilets in the room. 3. Remove and detach all fixtures from in and around the bathtub. 4. Make sure that you have good ventilation in the room by opening windows and turning on vents. 5. Lightly sand the entire tub. 6. Vacuum out the bathtub to remove the chips and debris from sanding. 7. Fill in any chipped, scratched, or worn areas sand the areas until smooth. 8. Spray paint up to 3 coats of primer and let dry between each coat. 9. Spray paint 3 to 4 layers of the top coat mixture. Typically, it will take about 48 hours for the bathtub to be usable. Make sure not to clean the newly refinished bathtub with harsh, abrasive cleaners. Although, when refinishing a bathtub, you can purchase simple repair kits for your bathtub, it's typically much better to hire someone, as it truly takes skill to make sure that you don't drip the refinishing coats. |
